--------------------------
Allora ho provato a farlo io. Ecco:

Molte di queste cose ormai ci sembrano normali. Non lo erano. E non sono cadute dal cielo: sono il risultato di decenni di integrazione europea.

I am copying and pasting a wonderful post that appeared on the Facebook page ("Un italiano in Islanda" ) of Dr. Roberto Luigi Pagani, a young professor of Icelandic literature at the University of Reykjavik.
It is a post that reflects what I —and many of my peers who watched Europe grow after the fall of the Berlin Wall— feel deep down in our soul.
He actually found 120 reasons to join or remain in the European Union. For me, one is enough: Europe is Home.
--------------------------
I was asked this question in the comments on a post where I discussed the results of the Icelandic referendum. The problem is that those who have already decided—before even looking at the facts—to be against Europe have no incentive to check what Europe has actually done. So, I decided to do it myself. Here goes:
1. It gave me the right to live in another European country without having to apply for a visa.
2. It gave me the right to work in another European country without a work permit.
3. It gave me the right to study in another European country under the same conditions as European citizens.
4. It allows me to move freely within the Union and the Schengen Area without internal border controls.
5. It allows me to buy goods and services in a single market of hundreds of millions of people, without tariffs between member states.
6. It allows me to sell and buy in other EU countries with far fewer bureaucratic and trade barriers.
7. It allows me to use the same currency across much of Europe, without having to exchange money or pay exchange fees every time I cross an Eurozone border. 8. It abolished roaming surcharges for me: when traveling within the EU, I can use calls, texts, and data essentially just as I do at home.
9. It also imposed limits on the cost of calls and text messages from Italy to other EU countries.
10. It allows me to temporarily use digital subscriptions purchased in Italy while abroad.
11. It mandated USB-C as the common connector for phones, tablets, and many other devices—and, starting in 2026, for laptops as well.
12. It therefore allows me to use the same charger for devices from different brands.
13. It allows me to buy a device without being forced to purchase an additional charger.
14. Through the GDPR, it gave me control over my personal data that I didn't have before.
15. It gave me the right to know what data of mine is being collected and processed.

101. It allows Italian businesses to export to the European market without internal tariffs.

118. If I live in another EU state, it allows me to vote in European elections in my country of residence.
119. It has given me European citizenship, which complements my Italian citizenship and grants me rights that can be exercised across the entire continent.
120. And above all, it has given me something we now take so much for granted that we forget just how extraordinary it is: I can be born in Italy, study in one European country, work in another, live in yet another, open a bank account, rent a home, build a career, start a family, and retire elsewhere in Europe without being treated as an immigrant from outside the EU.
Many of these things now seem normal to us. They were not. And they did not simply fall from the sky: they are the result of decades of European integration.
