PERSONE-ISOLE E COME RICONOSCERLE about island-people

Look at this incredible photo above, which portrays the latest eruption of Mount Etna (June 26, 2026)... An eruption so small that, we say, you need an inter-star telescope in order to photograph it from the valley. But someone managed to get a shot like this, instead. The author's name is GIOVINSKY, and is a "she", not a "he". She's always there, at the right moment and with the right timing, and it doesn't matter how much walking or, worse, trudging through rocks and ditches is involved, or what the weather conditions are. She is there! And that's it. If you read what I wrote recently about the "lava man" (HERE), well... Giovinsky is the Lava Lady!
Very few know her real name, but her stage name—Giovinsky Aetnensis—is now the law in the brutal jungle of the internet. Because she speaks through images, or rather... she screams! And she screams on social media (INSTAGRAM and FACEBOOK) through the great silence of the mountain, whether it is made of snow, rocky deserts, or bright hot lava. I'm telling you about Giovinsky because I think she belongs to that magical category of human beings I call "island-people". Those people who venture alone into worlds that seem prohibitive to others... or do by themselves what many should do... or who solve problems alone.
Another island-person I greatly respect and admire, besides Giovinsky, is "the mysterious man with the mustache". He's a retiree from my neighborhood, with a huge, yellowed mustache from smoking, who goes around the shops every morning giving away coffees, cappuccinos, or small glasses of granita cream to the shopkeepers. They aren't his relatives, nor close friends... just people he meets every day. And he thanks them for their work. I don't know this man's name, but I think he's doing something extraordinary on his own... not just for my neighborhood, but for humanity as a whole. Nourishing kindness.
I could give many other examples of island-people ... The young man who builds mysterious and charming art works with beach pebbles along the Mascali coast; Lorenzo Reina, the shepherd who built by himself a whole theatre on top of a 1000 mt-high mountain, near Agrigento; Sebastiano Genco, the nurse who is single-handedly building infrastructure in a village in Africa, relying only on the generous donations of friends and acquaintances; Orazio Barbarino, the priest suffering from Parkinson's disease who is using these years when his body still obeys him to create projects of recovery, work, and charity... and he does so with his own strength, with his own ideas; Lorena Fornasir, the retired psychologist who, together with her husband, uses her own strength and money to help the many migrants who pass through the Dolomites every day, reaching Trieste in desperate conditions.
Some offer hope, others work, others simply beauty... which is no less valuable... and they do it all alone in a world increasingly brutalized by the propaganda of hatred and death. They are precious people, the "island people"... Many of you might argue that anyway these people have friends, followers, and communities that support their dreams. And it's true, yes. Because the courage of the "island-people" attracts the respect of many others and ensures that they are no longer "islands". But continents.
