- But... how is it possible that you always welcome so many immigrants on the island of G***? I mean, how do you do it? You're a small land... about half the size of Sicily, if I'm not mistaken... isolated in the most isolated point of the Mediterranean Sea. Why are you so open to migrant rescue?
- Because this is everyone's island. Becoming a citizen isn't easy, and only a few manage to stay. But that doesn't stop us from opening our coasts to all those who arrive. Many migrants come from other nations, where they had previously landed, because those nations are "afraid of the invasion".
- How do you take care of them? Literally... where do you put them?
- Our police manage identification centers, in collaboration with our hospitals: here, the people who arrive find shelter, meals, and care. But they also are given useful information. And, after the initial checks, they are issued an IC - Identification Certificate.
- A temporary passport?
- A mix between an identity card and a passport. Of course, a temporary one which serves to make them identifiable for as long as they remain on the island.
- But many of these people will surely give false names... many don't even know how to write their own addresses...
- It doesn't matter whether the names are real or not. What matters is that everyone has an identity the police can track, so that if they commit crimes or try to leave the Country illegally, they can be stopped. If Abdul tells me his name is Kané, he'll have an IC with the name Kané written on ... and with that, he'll be identifiable until all the paperwork for his expatriation to Europe - or repatriation back to his homeland - is completed.
- You should not care about them ... Malta never does, Italy often doesn't care either, and so does Greece too...
- Well, maybe we shouldn't care. Sure, we could ignore them. But we don't want to. Because we are G***.
