STROMBOLI FA PACE CON IL CINEMA the cinema island

The island of Stromboli is not often chosen as a film set. The volcano, which rumbles constantly and erupts every 15 minutes, is frightening, and the territory is not always suitable for film crews' equipment and vehicles. However, the island was the stage of a great film of the past, a successful one (Stromboli, Land of God), directed by Roberto Rossellini, who was also a source of contention for the director's scandalous love story with Ingrid Bergman in 1950.

Many nature documentaries were set on Stromboli, but true cinema has remained distant since then.

The island thus welcomed with open arms the production of a Italian Television drama series about the Emergency Corps, which was supposed to be filmed permanently on site in 2022. Unfortunately,  because of the superficiality and carelessness of this team, this new historic opportunity risked turning into tragedy. While filming a fire scene, the crew lit a bonfire atop a hill. The fire was supposed to be under control, but the strong, hot Sirocco wind blowing off the Tyrrhenian Sea that day and the proximity of some brushwood to the site ignited a blaze of gigantic proportions. Within 24 hours, two sides of the volcano and half the island went up in smoke, posing a serious risk to the lives of the residents and the first tourists already on the place. The crew's lack of attention and blatant incompetence (never light a fire when a hot wind blows!), combined with their complete disinterest in the hours that followed (tourists helped the residents put out the flames, along with Canadairs, while the production crew fled), sparked anger and distrust among the island's residents, who initiated legal action against the production.

The scar of the man-made fire, far more ferocious than the volcano's natural fire, seemed to have permanently distanced cinema from Stromboli. It was no longer the volcano that was frightening now, but humans... the kind of human beings who neither care for the land nor respects its inhabitants. It's therefore not surprising that the only "film" that has come close to Stromboli in recent years has been an AI animation like James Cameron's "Avatar," where the computer operates instead of man, transforming the island into a virtual and untouchable landscape.

Fortunately, after so much time, something has changed. And another human film production has arrived on Stromboli this year to regain the islanders' trust. It was the team of director Alice Rohrwacher who, along with stars Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, and Isabella Rossellini, filmed THREE INCESTUOUS SISTERS (based on Chekhov) here. The cast also included rock star Mick Jagger, who bought a house on the Aeolian Islands, as well as several residents, such as the lively and original "pink-haired bookseller" Roberta (you can find her on Instagram here:https://www.instagram.com/fallifelici/ ).

Unlike the previous crew, director Rohrwacher immediately established a relationship of kindness, friendship, warmth, and above all respect for the island's inhabitants and nature. This respect and kindness were generously reciprocated. The cast and crew rose to the occasion and with the same sensitivity made the island their "home". And this time, no incident ruined the party. So Stromboli has made peace with cinema... and we'll soon admire it again on the big screen. It's going to be a special emotion!
